Wire mesh can be used for all sorts of things beyond construction work. If you have a little extra wire mesh from a company like the Hanover Concrete Company left over from a project or are looking for an inexpensive way to decorate for the Easter holiday, you're in luck! You can take some wire mesh and transform it into a beautiful basket to fill and decorate for Easter.
To make a wire mesh basket you will need:
- Wire mesh
- Tin snips
- Long-nose pliers
- Metal ruler
- Permanent marker
- Zip ties
- Work gloves
- Decorations – ribbon, plastic eggs, etc.
The instructions below are for a basket that is 12 inches long and 12 inches wide with 6-inch sides. You will need a sheet of mesh that is 24 inches square to complete it and an additional piece of mesh that is 24 inches long by 3 inches wide for the handle.
Cut the Mesh
Begin by measuring 6-inches from each corner along the outer edges of the mesh. Mark your measurements with a permanent marker. Measure 6-inches into the mesh to form a square. You will be removing 6-inch squares off of each corner of the mesh.
Use the tin snips to cut the four corners off of the sheet of mesh. When you are done cutting, you will be left with what looks a lot like a big, fat plus sign.
Fold the Mesh
Put on your work gloves before folding the mesh to avoid getting cut on the sharp edges. Place the metal ruler at what will be the base of the basket. This will help to ensure a straight fold as you shape the basket. Fold up all four sides to form the basket. Use the zip ties to hold the four sides together.
Attach the Handle
Attach one end of the 24 by 3 inch strip of wire mesh to one side of the basket using a few zip ties. Finish this step by attaching the other end of the strip on the other side of the basket in the same manner.
Decorate the Basket
Once the basket has taken shape, the fun can begin. How you decorate your basket is completely up to you. You can weave ribbon through the mesh, tie bows to cover the basket, use silk flowers all over the outside of the basket or even line the inside of the basket with fabric. Once it is decorated, you can fill it with all of the Easter goodies you like.
This is an affordable Easter project that can be enjoyed by people of many ages. Think about the gift baskets you can make this year without spending a fortune. The most important part of making an Easter basket out of wire mesh – have fun!
